One pair assured of place in Indonesian Masters semis


PETALING JAYA: Our doubles shuttlers led by Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik stormed into the quarter-finals of the Indonesian Masters.

Tokyo Olympics bronze medallists and national No. 1 Aaron-Wooi Yik carved out a stylish 21-12, 21-8 win over homesters Panjer Aji Siloka-Bryan Sidney Elohim in just 21 minutes to confirm their place in Bali yesterday.

The world No. 7 will take on Taiwan’s Olympics gold medallists Lee Yang-Wang Chi-lin for a place in the semi-finals today.

Aaron-Wooi Yik will enhance their chances of making it to the World Tour Finals, also on the island, next month if they make it to the final.

They are currently 14th in the race for the World Tour Finals. There will be another event, the Indonesian Open, taking place next week before the top-eight field for the Finals are announced.Malaysia are assured of a semi-finalists this weekend after Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani cleared their respective last-16 hurdles.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi secured a big boost of making the Tour Finals after beating Indonesians Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi 21-17, 21-12. They are now sixth in the ranking.

Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin also defeated another Indonesian pair, Muhd Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana, 21-18, 22-20 to set up the all-Malaysian clash.

In mixed doubles, only Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See are left standing.

They overcame Germany’s Jones Ralfy Jansen-Linda Efler 21-14, 21-19. Although Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie fought hard, they bowed out 21-15, 7-21, 20-22 to Hong Kong’s eighth seeds Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet.

Pang Ron-Yee See will face top seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai today.

The Thais eliminated Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Mei 21-17, 16-21, 21-17.

“Every match is not easy as we are not a top 10 pair,” said Pang Ron.

“But we will go out and fight for every point. We have less pressure so that helps a bit.”
