PETALING JAYA: Mixed pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying’s hopes of salvaging a respectable result in their last European outing have gone up in smoke.
The world No. 8 failed to live up to their status as the fourth seeds at the Hylo Open after going down 20-22, 21-15, 16-21 to Denmark’s world No. 43 Mikkel Mikkelsen-Rikke Soby in Saarbrucken, Germany yesterday.
With the defeat, the pair failed to build on their quarter-final appearance in the French Open last week.
It was also their second opening-round exit after they were sent packing by Hong Kong’s world No. 32 Chang Tak Ching-Ng Wing Yung at the Denmark Open.
Peng Soon-Liu Ying will now have two weeks to regroup before heading to Bali for the World Tour series, comprising the Indonesian Masters (Nov 16-21), Indonesian Open (Nov 23-28) and the World Tour Finals (Dec 1-5).
The Rio Olympics silver medallists can’t afford any more slip-ups if they want to make the top-eight cut for the season-ending Tour Finals. They are currently in sixth place.
It was also the end of the road for Liew Daren who went down 17-21, 20-22 to Hong Kong’s world No. 14 Lee Cheuk Yiu in men’s singles.
It was his sixth successive defeat to Cheuk Yiu, who was a semi-finalist at the Denmark Open two weeks ago.
Daren was a first-round casualty in Paris last week.
