Call-up a boost for juniors’ morale, says Misbun

PETALING JAYA: It’s a rare feat but Datuk Misbun Sidek is pleased that a player from the national junior team has been selected for the Uber Cup Finals.

Yesterday, 17-year-old Siti Nurshuhaini Azman was named in the squad in only her first year with the juniors. She will join S. Kisona, Goh Jin Wei, Eoon Qi Xuan and K. Letshanaa for the Finals in Denmark.

Misbun, who is the director of youth development, had also recommended Justin Hoh but the latter lost out to the more experienced and higher-ranked seniors.

For Misbun, the move to give juniors an opportunity to play in major events, showed the sport is heading in the right direction.

“With Nurshuhaini’s selection, the other juniors now know that they will be given a chance if they do well,” added Misbun.

“This unprecedented move will motivate them further. Now they know that they are given equal attention.

“This is the right development. By giving early exposure, we will have good and experienced players for the Olympic Games in 2024 and 2028.

“I’m glad there is good collaboration between the senior and junior squads and there is also good support from the Badminton Association of Malaysia. This is one way where we can expedite the progress of the juniors.”

Besides Nurshuhaini and Justin, Misbun pointed out there are other talented players in the team, which includes Fazriq Razif, Eogene Ewe Eon, V. Poopathi, Chua Kim Sheng and Chia Jeng Hon.
