Kisona to lead Sudirman Cup in absence of Jin Wei

PETALING JAYA: Former SEA Games champion Goh Jin Wei is out of the Sudirman Cup, leaving the leading women’s singles role to S. Kisona.

It’s learnt that Jin Wei is still not at her best form ahead of the Sudirman Cup from Sept 26-Oct 3 in Vaanta, Finland.

The 2019 Philippines SEA Games champion Kisona, ranked 53rd in the world is expected to be joined by one of these players – Eoon Qi Xuan (133), K. Letshanaa (761) and Myisha Khairul (no ranking) in the national team under coach Indra Wijaya.

On paper, it looks like Qi Xuan has a better chance of making the cut.

World No. 103 Jin Wei, however, is expected to make a return for the Uber Cup Finals from Oct 9-17 in Aarhus, Denmark.

Kisona, who is currently ranked second behind independent shuttler Soniia Cheah (34), should be able to lead the team based on her past result.

In the Spain Masters in June, Kisona defeated Jin Wei in an all-Malaysian final to win the title but unfortunately, when they returned home, they lost valuable training time after both were confirmed positive for Covid-19.

They are both back in training but Jin Wei has been taking a longer time to stabilise.
