‘Fortune’ favours Liek Hou

SHUTTLER Cheah Liek Hou defied the odds to become Malaysia’s first Paralympics badminton champion. At 33, many would have given up but not him. Instead, the southpaw is already making plans to defend the men’s singles SU5 gold in Paris.

Q: A big congratulations to you. How would you describe your win against the 22-year-old Dheva Anrimusthi?A: It’s just unbelievable that I have done it. I could not sleep the whole night. It was not a short-term plan, my journey had begun right from the day when I knew that badminton would be contested for the first time in Tokyo 2020, back in 2015. I have had many sleepless nights thinking about my dream and the pressure was immense. I was overwhelmed with joy when I won. I screamed so loud and out all the pent up emotion over the years.
