Fans may get to watch Malaysian Open from stands

Happening soon: As many as 2,000 fans may be allowed to watch the Malaysian Open from May 25-30.

PUTRAJAYA: Badminton fans may finally get to watch the Malaysian Open from the stands.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican is looking at allowing as many as 2,000 fans to enter the 16,000 capacity Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil to support their favourite players in the home tournament from May 25-30.

Since April 1, the government has allowed up to 2,000 spectators or 10% of the stadium capacity or whichever that is lower, for states under conditional movement control order.

For states under recovery movement control order, the venue can receive a maximum of 8,000 people or 25% of the stadium capacity.

Buoyed by the success of fans’ return to Super League match between Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Melaka at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium last Friday, it has been confirmed that spectators can return to the stadiums to watch Super and Premier League starting today.

And Reezal is convinced that the same model can be replicated for the Malaysian Open.

“We have received approval, on principle, from the National Security Council, ” said Reezal.
