No mix-up as Ee Wei and new partner Hon Jian reach semis

PETALING JAYA: Toh Ee Wei has made a superb return to the national team by reaching the semi-finals in her first tournament in more than two years.

Ee Wei and her new partner Choong Hon Jian defeated homesters Maciej Matusz-Szubert Karolina 21-16,21-9 in the mixed doubles quarter-finals of the lower-ranked Polish Open in Gniezno yesterday.

It was the first time Ee Wei is playing in the mixed doubles.

She was Pearly Tan’s former doubles partner and their last tournament together was when they won a silver medal at the World Junior Championships in Canada in 2018. She quit due to a health issue but returned last year.

Ee Wei-Hon Jian will take on another Polish pair Milosz Bochat-Wiktoria Adamek for a place in the final next.

In the men’s singles, former international Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin spoiled a perfect day for Malaysia.

Iskandar was the only casualty in the quarter-finals as three others, Leong Jun Hao, Ng Tze Yong and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, made it a grand day by reaching the semi-finals.

Iskandar went down fighting to Pablo Abian 21-19,14-21,21-23.

One place is assured in the final for Malaysia as Jun Hao will take on Tze Yong while Aidil will square off against Abian.

In the men’s doubles, Man Wei Chong-Kai Wun Tee and Chang Yee Jun-Chia Weijie made it to the semi-finals.
