A giant leap of faith

Time for a change: Tan Kian Meng is hoping for better luck as an independent player.

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttler Tan Kian Meng went to the Rio Olympic Games five years ago as a sparring partner but that was just not good enough for him.

Kian Meng wants to feature in the Olympics at least once in his badminton career and that’s why he has taken a bullish step by leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to pursue his dream with Lai Pei Jing. The former singles player was left in a predicament when BAM dropped his partner Pei Jing on Sunday over poor performance at the back-to-back tournaments in Thailand last month but spared him.
