PETALING JAYA: Dressing for success is one way to boost one’s confidence.
Clothing is a form of self-expression – there are hints about who you are in what you wear and professional mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying not only knows it but has fully embraced it.
Liu Ying has a collection of custom-made sports attires that she flaunts when competing in the mixed doubles with Chan Peng Soon.
And you can expect a new line of apparel when she begins the new season in style at the Thailand Open in Bangkok from Jan 12-17.
World No. 7 Liu Ying and Peng Soon, who won the 2016 Rio Olympic Games silver medal, are in the running to qualify for next year’s Tokyo Olympics.
“I like to dress up and it gives me lots of confidence when I play, ” said Liu Ying.
“The dress is my favourite. I feel comfortable in it. My sponsor Li-Ning and I discussed the designs that you see in the finished product.
“They know my favourite colour and the fashion that I like. They try to match the designs as close as they can to my liking and style.
“I’ll have a few more new outfits next year and I’m excited.”
Besides being an idol and role model, Liu Ying also tries her best to look good off the badminton court.
Her love for fashion has seen her on the catwalk as she is a part-time model with Amber Chia Academy since February, 2014.
“Sometimes, I dress up and wear heavy make-up. Sometimes, I tone it down. Many of my fans love it when I keep it natural, ” she said.
With years of experience in the fashion world, the 31-year-old has taken the bold step of opening an online store with the launch of GLY, her initials, in September.
Her store focuses on sports and lifestyles; food and beverages; supplement; and beauty care.
“The conditional movement control order gave me the perfect opportunity to start my own online store.
“I model some of my sponsor’s clothing here too, ” added Liu Ying, who hopes to be a trendsetter with her fashion sense in sports too.
