Jia Zheng and Shuen Tong live up to their billing

PETALING JAYA: It was a great day for top seeds Kok Jia Zheng and Goh Shuen Tong in the boys’ and girls’ Under-16 event at the 100Plus National Junior Circuit first leg badminton tournament when both made it to the quarter-finals albeit in contrasting styles.

Selangor’s Jia Zheng fended off a strong challenge before prevailing with a 21-17,12-21,21-16 win against Darrell Chew of Penang in the second round at the Selangor Badminton Association Hall yesterday.

He meets Johor’s Wee Yee Hern today for a place in the semi-finals.

The unseeded Yee Hern had little trouble disposing of Selangor’s Mohd Haziq Najib 21-5,21-15 in another second round match.

Meanwhile, in the girls’ singles, Sabah’s Shuen Tong justified her top billing by blowing away Chong Kei Wee 21-15,21-5 in just 20 minutes.

She will look to continue her smashing form in the quarter-finals against Kedah’s A. Sahannaa today.
