PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian women's badminton team has qualified for the Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark from May 16-24.
This comes after Malaysia secured a top four finish by beating Taiwan 3-1 in the quarter-finals of the Asia Team Championships in Manila on Friday (Feb 14).
Pearly Tan Koong Le-M. Thinaah were the heroes of the team as they beat Cheng Chi-ya-Liu Chiao-yun 18-21,21-17,21-18 to seal the third and winning point, after victories from singles shuttlers Soniia Cheah and Goh Jin Wei earlier put Malaysia 2-1 ahead.
Soniia got the ball rolling by notching a hard-fought 21-14,21-17,22-20 win over Pai Yu-po but world No. 15 Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean were a let down as they went down 14-21,14-21 to the No. 25 Hsu Ya-ching-Hu Ling-fang.
Fortunately, Jin Wei made up for their teammates' shortcoming by beating Chiang Ying-li 21-23,21-8,21-12 to restore the lead.
The win set up a rematch against top seeds Japan in tomorrow's semi-finals.
Malaysia had lost narrowly 3-2 to Japan during the group stage match on Thursday.
Reaching the last four is a commendable achievement for Soniia and teammates considering they are only the eighth seeds of the tournament.
This is also the first time Malaysia qualified on merit for the Uber Cup Finals through the Asia Team Championships, which inaugurated in 2016.
