PETALING JAYA: They started with a bang and then fell quiet for two years. Now, mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying and her partner Chan Peng Soon want to get cracking again at the All-England in Birmingham.
They had a grand first outing in 2017 when they emerged as the runners-up but failed to reproduce the same form in 2018 and 2019, crashing out in the second round both times.
At this year’s edition from March 11-15, the 2016 Rio Olympic Games silver medallists want to reach the final again.
Liu Ying said they were looking forward to the All-England after experiencing mixed fortunes in the last two Masters tournaments in Malaysia and Indonesia respectively this month.
The independent shuttlers did well in Malaysia to reach the semi-finals before losing to China’s world No. 2 Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping. In Jakarta, they went down to world No. 1 Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong of China in the quarter-finals.
“We consider it a good start to the year but we still have some catching up to do against our opponents from China, ” said Liu Ying.
“We have more than a month to work on our preparations. Hopefully, Peng Soon and I will be in good condition to give our opponents a run for their money.
“It will be great to reach the final again, ” added Liu Ying, who will take a break for Chinese New Year in Melaka before resuming training next week.
