Not good enough: Goh Soon Huat (back) and Shevon Lai Jemie were beaten by world No. 1 Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong of China in the Fuzhou China Open yesterday.

PETALING JAYA: There was no further joy for Malaysia at the Fuzhou China Open as men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie’s gallant run came to an end in the semi-finals.

World No. 14 Aaron-Wooi Yik had no answers to fourth seeds Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda of Japan as they lost 13-21,14-21 in just 31 minutes yesterday.

It was their second time losing to the Japanese following their quarter-final defeat at the New Zealand Open in May.

It is certainly a disappointing finish for the youngsters as they failed to replicate the form that saw them power past reigning world champions Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in the last eight.

World No. 11 Soon Huat-Shevon were also outclassed in their match, going down tamely 16-21,10-21 in 34 minutes to world No. 1 Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong of China.

Both Aaron-Wooi Yik and Soon Huat-Shevon could have created history as the first Malaysian pairs to enter the men’s doubles and mixed doubles finals in the tournament, previously known as the China Masters.

Shevon admitted Siwei-Yaqiong were just a class above after going down to their fifth consecutive defeat to the two-time world champions.

“Siwei-Yaqiong were clearly the better pair of the day. We definitely have plenty of catching up to do, ” said Shevon.

“But we’re pretty happy to make it to the semis.

“We’ve got to build on this and carry this momentum into the Hong Kong (Open) next week.”
