Veteran breaks first-round jinx with win over Thai youngster


A stroll: Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia easily swept aside Brazil’s Ygor Coelho 21-17, 21-15 in the first round of the World Championships in Basel yesterday.

PETALING JAYA: Independent shuttler Liew Daren showed he is not over the hill yet by getting off to a flying start at the World Championships in Basel, Switzerland.The 32-year-old overcame his opening hurdle woes in his fourth attempt when he pulled off a convincing 21-19, 21-13 win over Thailand youngster Khosit Phetpradab at the St. Jakobshalle Indoor Arena yesterday.

The world No. 36 Daren has failed to win his opening matches in his last three starts at the Indonesian Open, Japan Open and Thailand Open but yesterday, he was on fire in his 45-minute win over the 22-year-old, who is seven rungs higher than him.
