Home favourite suffers shock first round defeat in Junior Circuit Grand Prix Finals

PETALING JAYA: Home-side favourite Vanessa Ng Po Lyn could not handle the pressure as she was handed a shock first round defeat in the girls' Under-16 singles of the 100PLUS National Junior Circuit Grand Prix Finals in Seremban.

Third seed Vanessa of Negri Sembilan let down the home side when she fell 17-21, 21-23 to Johor's Oh Jia Qi at the Negri Sembilan Chinese Recreation Club Thursday (July 4).

"My target was at least the semi-finals, but I was nervous. It was a disappointing performance as I can play much better than this," said Vanessa after her defeat.

"I was under pressure playing in front of my home fans... I simply did not get the feel of the match."

Jia Qi will play Selangor's Lim Qi Ling in the second round.

Meanwhile, defending champion Arena Satu Samin of Sabah crushed Kuala Lumpur's Amanda Yap Hwa Leng 21-9, 21-11 in 19 minutes to earn a second-round clash against Tan Shen Thing of Penang, who outclassed Tan Jet Sin of Pahang, 21-11, 21-15.

Second seed Joanne Ng May Yin of Malacca marched into the second round at the expense of Johor's Hoe Shi Yun, 21-15, 21-16.

May Yin will face Selangor's Sik Xiao Hui, who won 21-14, 21-12, against Tan Mei Xin of Penang for a place in the quarter-finals.
