PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian badminton team could not have asked for a more difficult challenge after they were drawn to play Japan in the quarter-finals of the Sudirman Cup in Nanning, China.
The teams will clash on Friday morning (May 24).
If Japan were to field their best five, they will have the top five representatives in all five categories at the World Mixed Team Championships.
In the singles events, the top ranked men's player in the world is Kento Momota, while Nozomi Okuhara is the world No. 2 in the women's.
In the men's doubles, they have world No. 2 Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda, top ranked women's doubles pair Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara and world No. 3 Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino.
Should Malaysia be able to create a massive upset against Japan, the team will face either Taiwan or Indonesia in the semi-final.
Meanwhile in the top half of the quarter-final draw, China will meet Denmark and South Korea will play Thailand.
