KUALA LUMPUR: Independent mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying have received a big monetary boost to keep alive their 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games qualifying campaign.
The world No. 5 were unveiled as Yobick’s latest brand ambassadors after signing a two-year-contract at the Eatropica Cafe at Nu Sentral here yesterday.
The deal saw the two players receive a six-figure cash sponsorship each.
In return, they’ll use the Yobick logo on their jerseys.
The exact amount of the sponsorship, however, was not revealed.
The yogurt drink is one of several products under DyDo Mamee Malaysia.
Buoyed by the deal, Peng Soon-Liu Ying hoped to repay the good faith of their sponsors by winning at least a medal at the World Championships in Basel, Switzerland, from Aug 19-25.
“We really have to thank Yobick because we really needed this sponsorship to fight our way to the Tokyo Games. We don’t have to worry about finance now,” said Peng Soon.
Since leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), Peng Soon-Liu Ying had to source their own income to fund for their training and competitions.
“Thanks to the sponsors, we can solely focus on winning honours for Malaysia now,” said Peng Soon.
“The standard of the World Championships is equal to the Olympics and we want to do well in it.”
Liu Ying added: “The money will help us cover all our travel expenses for all our tournaments until Tokyo and beyond.”
“We are planning around 20 to 22 tournaments for the next two years. We can now fully focus on training,” said Liu Ying, who won the New Zealand Open early this month.
