She’ll Goh far, going by her smashing start at the YOG

PETALING JAYA: National shuttler Goh Jin Wei’s (pic) bid to win the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) girls’ singles gold medal got off to a flying start in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The 18-year-old checked into the quarter-finals in style by becoming one of the eight group champions in the preliminary rounds which ended on Tuesday.

Jin Wei topped Group C, which included Indonesia’s Maharani Sekar Batari, Sweden’s Ashwathi Pillai and Ann-Kathrin Spori of Germany.

She opened her campaign on Sunday by beating Maharani 21-11, 21-15 before following it up with wins over Ashwathi (21-15, 21-12) and Spori (21-7, 18-21, 21-9).

Jin Wei faces Group D winner Vu Thi Anh Thu of Vietnam next. If she wins, she will face top seed Phittayaporn Chaiwan of Thailand.
