Chee Tean’s mixed doubles partner succumbs to her injury

PETALING JAYA: Austrian shuttler Antonia Mainke, who was one of the three victims involved in the car crash that claimed former national shuttler Tan Chee Tean’s life on Sept 29, has passed away.

The 21-year-old succumbed to her injuries last Saturday, according to a report by badminton portal

Mainke was said to be the behind the wheels when the trio were travelling back to Vienna after competing in the Czech Open in Brno.

Chee Tean died on the spot from the impact of the head-on collision with another car.

The status of the third victim, Jenny Ertl, also of Austria, was not immediately known.

Seven months after leaving the national team, Chee Tean headed for Austria three weeks ago in a bid to resurrect his badminton career.

He formed a mixed doubles partnership with Mainke and did well in their first tournament, reaching the quarter-finals at the Polish International last month.
