Sabahan Arena qualifies for the semis


PETALING JAYA: Future star Arena Satu brought cheers to the Sabah camp as she checked into the semi-finals of the 100PLUS National Junior Grand Prix Finals in Seremban.

In the women’s Under-16 quarter-finals, Arena face some resistance before getting the better of BAM shuttler Vanessa Ng Po Lyn 21-15, 21-13 to cheers from the Sabah camp.

Arena now meets Go Pei Kee of BAM in the semi-finals.

“I’m improving but Vanessa is a certainly tough nut to crack as she has great skills and endurance. However, I managed to push her to the limit by continuously engaging her in long rallies,” said Arena.

“I’m thrilled to be in the semi-finals but right now. I don’t want to get carried away,” said Arena.

In the other quarter-finals, Pei Kee booked her berth in the last four after defeating Loh Zhi Wei of Selangor 22-20, 21-15 in just 27 minutes.

BAM’s Hoe Shi Yun squares off against Isabel Liau Bei Yi, also of BAM, in the other semi-final. The former beat Penang’s Khor Jing Wen 21-23, 21-17, 21-9 while the latter downed Selangor’s Lim Qi Ling 21-8, 21-14 in the quarter-finals.

In the men’s Under-16 ties, BAM’s Ong Zhen Yi (pic) cruised into the semi-finals following a 21-14, 21-17 win over S. Muniandy of Johor.

In the other quarter-finals, Demond Anthony (Sabah) defeated Teh Jin Hong (Penang) 21-16, 21-13, BAM’s Ng Yaw Pin scored a 14-21, 21-15, 21-15 win over Anson Cheong Yan Feng, also from BAM and Ong Ken Yong (Melaka) came from a game down to oust Penang’s Samuel Lee 16-21, 21-13, 21-17.

The semis and final matches for both the men’s and women’s Under-16 competition will be played today.
