KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be banking on reigning Dutch Junior Open champions Pearly Tan Koong Le-Toh Ee Wei to deliver the goods at the Asian Junior Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, from July 14-22.
The top girls’ doubles shuttlers Pearly and Ee Wei are two of the 16-member squad named for the Asian junior meet.
National junior coach Kwan Yoke Meng (pic) is hoping that Pearly-Ee Wei can go one step better than their quarter-final finish at last year’s edition.
“We have set a semi-final goal for them. They’ve been impressive this year and we hope they’ll keep the momentum going,” said Yoke Meng.
Yoke Meng is also banking on Pearly to strike it right in the mixed doubles with Chang Yee Jun. The duo made it to the last 16 in last year’s outing.
“We want them to make it to the top eight,” he said.
The other hopefuls in the team are last year’s girls’ singles bronze medallists Eoon Qi Xuan and Smiling Fish Junior International boys’ singles runner-up Ooi Jhy Dar.
“Most of them are new faces in the national junior team. We hope they will use this platform for exposure.”
The only non-Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) player in the squad is Selangor’s K. Letshana, who has done well to dominate the girls’ singles Under-16 in the national junior circuit this year.
Last year, Malaysia bagged one title through Leong Jun Hao in the boys’ singles.
