PETALING JAYA: China have called up 2012 London Olympic champion Li Xuerui to beef up their challenge in Uber Cup Finals in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 20-27.

There is fear that China will lose their domination in the women’s team following the inconsistent performances of their players in recent times.

China have lost the Uber Cup titles only three times since they made their debut in 1984. They lost to Indonesia in the final of the 1994 Jakarta and 1996 Hong Kong editions. They were also stunned by South Korea at the 2010 edition in Kuala Lumpur.

Their main challengers this year will be Japan.

The 27-year-old Xuerui suffered a knee injury during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and only made a return to competitive action at the China Masters and she did well to win it.

She is the fourth ranked player behind Chen Yufei, He Bingjiao and Gao Fangjie and is expected to play as the third singles.

Their doubles players are Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan, Huang Yaqiong-Tang Jinhua and Huang Dongping-Yu Zheng.

China are drawn in Group D with France, Indonesia and Malaysia.
