PETALING JAYA: One is mentally strong. The other does not give up easily.
And it’s this synergy that Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie will be banking on to pull off another good show when they make their debuts at the All-England in Birmingham starting tomorrow.
On Sunday, a mentally tough Soon Huat and determined Shevon complemented each other well to capture their biggest career title by winning the German Open in Mulheim.
The world No. 10 will be hoping to ride on the momentum when they face homesters Chris Adcock-Gabrille Adcock in the first round tomorrow.
Shevon complimented Soon Huat’s strong presence.
“He’s the most patient, understanding and a mentally strong partner. We’ve been working together well and the German Open title is the result of the effort,” said Shevon.
“We hope to keep it up but the All-England first round will be challenging.
“We’re facing a higher-ranked pair and they’ll have plenty of home support.”
Soon Huat believes they have the credentials to reach the quarter-finals.
“Shevon and I have improved in our defensive game and are more consistent on court,” said Soon Huat, who was a singles player without much success before he switched to mixed doubles in late 2016.
“She’s a good listener and never gives up. She is ever ready to learn no matter how hard it is.
“Winning the German Open is great for us but we don’t plan to rush into things, we’ll stay focused and aim for steady progress.”
National mixed doubles head coach Chin Ee Hui was surprised with the win.
“Their condition was not up to the mark when they returned from the Chinese New Year break but they’ve done well at the German Open,” said Ee Hui.
“They trust one another. The key is that they have good communication and they support one another.
“But being a champion once does not mean anything.
“They still have lots of areas to improve on. The good news is that they know it.”
The other Malaysian mixed doubles representatives at the All-England are last year’s runners-up Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing.
