PETALING JAYA: After three failed attempts, Puchong United Badminton Club (PUBC) finally captured the SS Purple League (SSPL) title when they defeated Kepong Badminton Club (KBC) 10-8 in the final at the Arena of Stars in Genting Highlands yesterday.
PUBC pocketed RM520,000 for their success while KBC took home RM265,000.
World No. 8 Chou Tien Chen gave PUBC a superb start by beating Dey Subhankar 10-11, 11-3, 11-7, 8-11, 11-3 in the first men’s singles.
China’s Deng Xuan extended PUBC’s lead after putting on a stellar performance to beat Qin Jin Jing 11-8, 11-10, 11-10 in the women’s singles match.
KBC, however, fought back when Taiwanese men’s doubles pair Su Ching-heng-Liao Min-chun upset Mak Hee Chun-Yoo Yeon-seong 11-4, 11-10, 11-9.
But Malaysian combination Tan Kian Meng-Goh Liu Ying stepped up to beat Goh Soon Huat-Cheah Yee See 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7 in the mixed doubles to put PUBC in a commanding position heading into the last men’s singles match.
Hong Kong’s Wei Nan only needed to win one game against Lim Chi Wing and he did his part to hand PUBC the trophy. He won the third game 11-7 before conceding a walkover. Wei Nan lost the first two games 10-11, 7-11.
Puchong United BC’s team manager Irina Inozemtseva said: “Our dream has finally come true after four years.
“We established Puchong United BC and started out with very little in 2014, so to win the championship today means the world to us.
“It’s a fantastic achievement. We knew from day one that we had to put a lot of hard work into it and make sacrifices to win. Today, it felt like it was all worth it.”
