Flying high: Goh V Shem (back) and Tan Wee Kiong whipped Denmark

KUALA LUMPUR: Former world No. 1 Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong got off to a good start at the Indonesian Masters in Jakarta.

The world No. 24 bounced back in style by whipping Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen-David Daugaard 21-18, 21-13 in the men’s doubles first round yesterday.

The Rio Olympic silver medallists are aiming to get it right in their third tournament this year after coming up short in the last two.

V Shem-Wee Kiong lost to Indonesians Fajar Alfian-Muhd Rian Ardianto in the final of the Malaysian Masters last week and they went down to homesters Tinn Isriyanet-Kittisak Namdash in the semi-finals of the Thailand Masters two weeks ago.

The duo, who resumed their partnership this year following a brief separation, have been title-less since bagging the World Superseries Finals in 2016.

Malaysia’s world No. 38 Chooi Kah Ming-Low Juan Shen also enjoyed a winning start by edging Danes Kasper Antonsen-Niclas Nohr 21-18, 19-21, 21-17 to set up a meeting against fourth seeds Mads Conrad-Petersen-Mads Pieler Kolding of Denmark in the second round today.

It was all over for Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani when they went down fighting 21-19, 12-21, 12-21 to Rian Agung Saputro-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia yesterday.

In the mixed doubles, Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei failed to emulate the form that saw them reach the semi-finals of the Thailand Masters after losing 23-25, 23-21, 18-21 to Taiwan’s Wang Chi-lin-Lee Chia-hsin in the first round yesterday.

Malaysia however, are still going strong in the mixed doubles with Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie winning their matches on Tuesday.

World No. 13 Soon Huat-Shevon pulled off a stunning 12-21, 21-19, 21-19 win over world No. 4 Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping of China while Kian Meng-Pei Jing defeated Niclas Nohr-Sara Thygesen of Denmark 22-20, 21-11.
