Jun Hao glad to steal a game off old-timer Wei Nan

No regrets: Leong Jun Hao of Serdang BC was pleased despite losing to Hong Kong’s Wei Nan of Puchong United BC in the SS Purple League yesterday.

PETALING JAYA: Youngster Leong Jun Hao will treasure the experience of playing against old-timer Wei Nan of Hong Kong in the SS Purple League.

The 18-year-old lost 11-3, 6-11, 5-11, 5-11 to the world No. 52 in the final men’s singles match between Serdang Badminton Club (Serdang BC) and Puchong United Badminton Club (Puchong United BC) at the Sports Arena Sentosa in Jalan Kelang Lama yesterday.

With Jun Hao’s defeat, his club Serdang BC slumped to a 3-14 defeat to Puchong United BC.

The other two points for Serdang BC came through China’s Xu Yiming, who drew 10-11, 11-7, 11-7, 7-8 with Thomas Cupper Liew Daren in the first men’s singles match.

The World Junior Champion-ships runner-up Jun Hao was pleased despite losing to the 33-year-old Wei Nan.

“This is my first meeting against Wei Nan. He is experienced but I’m glad to steal one game off him,” said Jun Hao.

“Young players like me have the opportunity to play against seasoned campaigners in the league. It’s a valuable experience. This defeat will help me to be better,” he said.

Jun Hao has shown plenty of promise since the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) roped him into the national team in January this year.

“I’m looking forward to my second year as a senior in the national team.

“I aim to make it a better year,” added Jun Hao, who trains under men’s singles head coach Datuk Misbun Sidek.

This year, he bagged the Asian junior title and gave his senior Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin a good fight before losing in the final of the Malaysian Interna-tional Challenge in Pasir Gudang, Johor, last month.
