Negri beat Melaka to reach Agong Cup semis as top seeds

CYBERJAYA: Negri Sembilan survived a fierce challenge from Melaka to qualify as top seeds for the men’s semi-finals of the Agong Cup National Basketball Championships.

Negri, seeking a third straight title, pulled away late in the fourth quarter to register a convincing 81-62 win at the Gem In Mall here yesterday.

With several national cagers in their line-up, Negri built a 38-32 lead at half-time before Melaka staged a fierce comeback to lead 58-57 in the third quarter.

Negri, however, had the better composure and they found their rhythm in the fourth quarter to finish with a 19-point win.

Wong Yi Hou led the scoring for Negri with 28 points while Ivan Yeo contributed 21 points.

Negri, who are unbeaten in all their five matches, now face fourth seeds Sarawak in the last four while Melaka take on third seeds Police.

In the women’s event, defending champions Selangor consolidated their status as top seeds for the semi-finals after whipping Sarawak 67-39 for their fifth straight win.

Selangor will take on fourth seeds Melaka in the last four while second seeds Kuala Lumpur are up against third seeds Johor.



Men: Negri Sembilan bt Police 90-63, Police bt Selangor 80-63, Sarawak bt Sabah 102-81.

Women: Johor bt Sarawak 90-30, Selangor bt Sarawak 67-39, Johor bt Sabah 105-50, Kuala Lumpur bt Melaka 63-37.
