PETALING JAYA: Kepong Badminton Club made it two wins in as many days as they beat Serdang Badminton Club 10-8 to move within one point of the SS Purple League (SSPL) summit.
Kepong BC, who overcame Cheras BC 12-8 on Thursday, raced to a 6-0 lead courtesy of Lim Chi Wing’s 11-6, 11-9, 11-4 win over Chinese import Yu Chen in the first men’s singles and Ho Yen Mei defeating national teammate Lee Ying Ying 11-10, 11-9, 11-7 in the women’s singles at the Sports Arena Sentosa, Jalan Kelang Lama, yesterday.
Marquee signing Yang Po-han of Taiwan, the world No. 11, then teamed up with former international Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub to give Kepong BC an unassailable lead at 9-2 by coming from behind to beat Pei Tianyi-Tan Jinn Hwa 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-10, 7-6 in the men’s doubles.
Despite the setback, Serdang BC fought back to win the remaining two ties through Leong Jun Hao (second men’s singles) and Taiwanese Chen Hsiao-hsuan-Lu Ching-yao (mixed doubles).
The points accumulated by a team are determined by the number of games, rather than matches, won by the players.
Kepong BC now sit just one point behind Puchong United BC who lead the eight-team standings with 30 points.
Serdang BC are third on 24.
Kepong BC’s manager Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif was pleased with the win but has warned his team against complacency.
“I hope our players will continue to improve as we will be facing even tougher opponents in the coming matches,” he said.
