SS Purple League produces first ever draw under new rules

PETALING JAYA: No kidding.

In probably the first time ever in Malaysia, a badminton clash ended in a draw.

In the SS Purple League yesterday, Serdang Badminton Club’s Ong Wei Khoon-Ooi Zi Heng had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Bangsar Hawks BC’s Gao Xiang Cheng-Zhou Bowei at the Gem In Mall in Cyberjaya.

Wei Khoon-Zi Heng were levelled at 9-11, 11-10, 11-5, 7-10 with Xiang Cheng-Bowei in the men’s doubles when the maximum 30-minute duration ran out.

Under the new rule introduced this season, each tie’s duration is 30 minutes. The winner is the one leading at the end of the duration.

The unexpected draw certainly helped Serdang BC complete a come-from-behind 10-8 win with Lee Zii Jia delivering the winning points.

Trailing 7-8 going into the last tie, Zii Jia outplayed Chang Lip Seng 11-6, 11-8, 11-7 to give Serdang BC their first win in the league.
