KUALA LUMPUR: Who wants to support Lee Chong Wei at the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil – all paid for and with a ticket to boot?
Just take part in the 100Plus Badminton Team Championships over the weekends from May 7-26 organized by former internationals Wong Choong Hann, Lee Wan Wah, Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng under the Pioneer Sports Management.
The preliminary rounds on May 7-8 and May 14-15 will be held at the Pioneer Badminton Centre in Endah Parade, Sri Petaling and the final will take place at the Paradigm Mall on May 26.
Wan Wah says that they have decided to organise the team event to repay the good faith of the Malaysian badminton supporters.
“It is open to social badminton players from the ages of 19-55,” said Wan Wah on Saturday.
“And no, none of the Bukit Jalil Sports School or ex-BJSS players are allowed to play. It is also closed to all the current and former state and national players.
“This is our way to appreciate all the badminton fans in the country. We are giving away Olympic Games tickets for the winning team. Their trip to Rio will all be paid for.”
Wan Wah said that the format of the team event, which would be held during the Thomas Cup Finals in Wuhan, China, would be different but interesting.
A team will consist of eight players. The team will play two men’s doubles and one mixed doubles. Two others are the reserves.
“On top of the eight free Olympic Games tickets, the winning team will also get cash RM20,000 as the top prize.”
The former Olympian Wan Wah said that they would also conduct coaching clinics on the final day of the team event at Paradigm Mall, which could also see two-time Olympic Games silver medalists Chong Wei joining in the fun.
