PETALING JAYA: Not even the shock loss of world No. 3 Kento Momota could stop Ampang Jaya BC from easing their way to an 11-7 win over Klang United BC in the Resorts World Genting Purple League.

The four-game difference gained at the Sports Arena Sentosa in Jalan Klang Lama on Tuesday saw eight-placed Ampang Jaya go 20 points clear of ninth-placed Nusajaya BC.

The top eight teams will qualify for the Champions Challenge in Genting Highlands from Jan 12-17.

Ampang Jaya’s triumph was secured by Lee Cheuk Yiu (men’s singles), Kuan Kam Chung-Shevon Lai Jemie (mixed doubles) and Ong Yew Sin-Rendy Sugiarto (men’s doubles).

Women’s singles shuttler Ho Yen Mei’s gallant run in the league, however, came to an end after she was beaten 9-11, 11-6, 7-11, 4-11 by American Zhang Beiwen.

Yen Mei had won in all of her four previous starts.

But it was Momota’s unexpected 7-11, 4-11, 9-11, 2-11 defeat to world No. 194 Evert Sukamta that took the shine off Ampang Jaya’s triumphant day.
