KUALA LUMPUR: Ampang Jaya BC have roped in He Guo Quan, Lin Dan’s coach during his junior days, to help prepare the team’s charge for glory in next month’s Junior Purple League (JPL).

Guo Quan, who resigned as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) national coach after serving for eight months, is the club’s second coaching consultant from China. He joins former singles great Zhao Jianhua, who helped the club to finish sixth in the Kopiko Purple League last year.

Team manager Ho Khek Mong is happy that their preparation for the JPL, which will begin in August, is coming along smoothly.

“We have selected our junior team ... it’s complete with the appointment of Guo Quan,” said Khek Mong.

“Guo Quan had played his part in Lin Dan’s early progress ... we hope he’ll do the same with our junior team.”

Khek Mong said that they even conducted selection trials in Kuching, Sarawak, to give East Malaysians an opportunity to play in the JPL.

“Players from this state do not get many opportunities to attend selection trials. So, we decided to hold it there and two of them were selected,” he said.

They are Aaron Chien and Owen Ting.

“We also have some players from BJSS (Bukit Jalil Sports School), including one of the top juniors Tan Jia Wei (who is currently in Bangkok for the Asian Junior Championships). We also have several juniors from Indonesia. We have a good mix,” added Khek Mong, who hopes that his team can finish in the top three in the league.
