THERE were upsets galore in the third round of the women’s singles in World Championships and popular television commentator Gillian Clark is loving it.
“I made a comment a year ago during the London Olympic Games that the women’s singles will be one of the most exciting and that many young shuttlers will rise up to give the Chinese girls a fight. It’s happening now,” she said.

“I can’t wait for the next Olympic Games (in 2016) as the race for the women’s singles will be quite open. It’s certainly great for the game and gives commentators like me a lot to talk about.”
On Thursday, 18-year-old P.V. Sindhu of India stole the show when she beat second seed Wang Yihan of China 21-18, 23-21 while Spanish darling Carolina Marin tore the record books to shreds by ousting fifth seed and top Korean shuttler Sung Ji-hyun.

Japan's Sayaka Takahashi also played well in the World Championships.
Yesterday, Sindhu dumped another China player out of the competition, ousting Wang Shixian 21-18, 21-17.
There are others – like Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand, Japan’s Sayaka Takahashi, India’s Saina Nehwal and Taiwanese Tai Tzu-ying – just as capable of inflicting damage on the top players.
