Sarawak's strong man Jonah brings cheers with Games record

PETALING JAYA: Sarawak shot putter Jonah Chang Rigan needed just two throws to break the Malaysia Games (Sukma) record.

The 21-year-old, who is the national holder with 18.45m, broke the Games mark by hurdling a distance of 17.66m at the Sarawak Stadium on Monday (Aug 19).

The previous mark of 17.31m was set by Terengganu’s Adi Alifuddin Husin at the 2010 Melaka Sukma Games.

Even though he had a slight chest injury, he was able to give his best for the fans.

Silver went to Sabah’s Pan Hong Seng (14.38m) and Kelantan’s Wan Mohd Irfan Wan Mohd Tahar took bronze (13.83m).

In the triple jump, Perak’s Shah Sholihin Azshar won the gold with a jump of 15.41m.

Selangor’s Izzul Haniff Mohd Raffi took the silver with 14.96m, while Sabah’s Eljoe Goutuoh bagged a bronze with a jump of 14.71m.

In the girls‘ 5000m, Selangor’s Esther Joy raced to the gold with a time of 19:33.12, while Perak’s K. Margaret Mary won silver, 19:42.15

Perak’s Tan Zhi Lin took bronze with a time of 19:51.45.
