Commonwealth Games: Malaysia in lawn bowls women’s triples final

PETALING JAYA: At least a silver medal is in hand for the Malaysian women’s triples team in the lawn bowls event of the Commonwealth Games.

The trio of Nur Ain Nabilah Tarmizi, Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman and Azlina Arshad beat New Zealand’s Val Smith, Tayla Bruce and Nicole Toomey 16-9 in the semifinal at the Victoria Park in Leamington Spa on Friday (Aug 5).

The Malaysians did not have the best of starts as New Zealand took a 1-0 lead in the first end, but in the next 16, they just made sure to take and stay in the lead to book a spot in the final with a polished performance.

They will take on England’s trio Jamie Winch, Natalie Chestney and Sian Honnor later at 11.30pm.

The last time Malaysia won gold in the triples event was in Melbourne in 2006 when Azlina, Nor Hashimah Ismail and Nor Iryani Azmi beat Australia.
