Triple A makes amends with gold in triple jump

AFTER Andre Anura Anuar’s poor outing in the long jump, coach Mohd Firdaus Salim was a dazed man, not knowing what had gone wrong.

Andre fouled his jump in four of his six attempts and could only finish fifth with a distance of 7.24m on Sunday.

Yesterday though, Andre was a transformed man. He atoned for his failure by leaping to a distance of 16.51m – his personal best – en route to winning the triple jump gold.

This time, Firdaus was like all fired up, shouting “Malaysia Boleh” when it was confirmed that the 22-year-old retained the gold won by Malaysia three years ago through Hakimi Ismail.

Andre, who was lost for words, just shouted “Malaysia” and hoisted the flag in front of the cheering Malaysian media.

“This is so satisfying! It is nice to get the gold after that poor long jump outing. I felt so sorry for my coach because he was sad that I couldn’t win on Sunday.

“He actually looked dazed. Imagine missing four attempts due to a technicality and only getting two right, no coach would be happy. We actually targeted the gold in the long jump.

“Today, I told myself to just go all out. My outing felt so good. Everything went right; the rhythm was good, and also, I broke my personal record of 16.09m. I want to thank my coach and mates.”

When told that he has realised the athletics team target of five golds, he said, “Really?”

“I did not know that I was the one who hit that target. I was only thinking of doing my best in the triple jump. I just wanted to make a comeback after that long jump event.”

The Philippines’ Mark Harry Aloto won silver with an attempt of 15.87m, while Vietnam’s Tran Van Dien recorded 15.84m.

Meanwhile, Norliyana Kamarud-din won the heptathlon bronze medal with a score of 5,262. Vietnam’s Nguyen Nga Linh took gold with 5,415, while the Philippines’ Sarah Noveno claimed silver (5,381).

In the shot putt, Queenie Ting Kung Ni, who won silver in the discus two days ago, finished fifth with a throw of 11.63m.
