From dreams of being national walker, to wheelchair

KUALA LUMPUR: M. Muniandy (pic) started his career in walking at the age of 13 with dreams of representing Malaysia. He got his first break when he represented his state Kedah in the National Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Championships.

Then, he took the first step towards his national dream when he featured in the 10,000m and 20,000m walk events at the Kedah Sukma (Malaysia Games) in 2006.

When he won the 10,000m walk at the Perak Open in 2007, the dream looked even closer.

But his world came crashing down in 2013 when he was diagnosed with a nerve problem, which affected his hands and legs.

It didn’t bother him too much then, as the technician at Smartac company in Kulim could still walk.

However, his health deteriorated and he became too weak over the last five years. And for the last two years, he has been wheelchair-bound.

The 32-year-old’s mother died 12 years ago and his father M. Maselan Mani has been taking care of him since, with the help of other six siblings.

“I was making progress in competitions and everything was going fine for me until 2013 when I was told I had the nerve problems. It ended my dreams in walking. It was a nightmare that I had never expected to suffer. I was a fit and healthy person, ” said Muniandy, who studied at the Chio Min Chinese Secondary School in Kulim.

He is now relying on his Sosco allowance every month.
