KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-elected Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) president Datuk S.M. Muthu has two things on his mind right now.
He wants to boost the association’s coffers and help raise the standard of athletics in the country.
Muthu defeated incumbent Datuk Karim Ibrahim at the MAF’s annual general meeting (AGM) at the Wisma OCM yesterday.
The deputy president’s post was won by Datuk Mumtaz Jaafar after Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim pulled out on Friday.
The four vice-presidents are Datuk Mark William Ling, Datuk Fadzil Abu Bakar, Rajemah Sheikh Ahmad and Josephine Kang.
Muthu, who was MAF’s deputy president, said the new team have a lot of work to do.
“The elected members now have a huge responsibility on their hands. Our priority is to get more funds maybe through sponsorship as having a bigger budget will benefit the athletes,” said Muthu.
He also added that former chief coach Harun Rashid has been identified as one of the candidates to lead the national coaching stable.
“Harun has vast experience and a good track record but nothing is concrete yet ... we will make an announcement soon,” said Muthu.
“We might hire more foreign coaches but first we’ll give the local coaches a chance to prove themselves.”
