Buck up or lose your Podium spot, archers told

KUALA LUMPUR: Archers Khairul Anuar Mohamad and Mohd Zarif Syahiir Zolkepeli are at risk of being dropped from next year’s Podium Programme due to their poor performance at the Hanoi SEA Games in May.

National Archery Association of Malaysia (NAAM) president Datuk Abdul Hamid Hasan, however, said the duo will be given a second chance if they show improvement.

Hamid said the two Olympians will have to prove themselves at four national circuits until December to remain in the programme handled by the National Sports Council (NSC).

“Opportunities to be selected for the programme are open to eligible archers in the country. They must make good use of this chance via the circuits,” added Hamid.

In Hanoi, Khairul won silver in the mixed recurve with Syaqiera Mashayikh. He also bagged two bronzes in the individual recurve event and the men’s team recurve with Zarif.

Hamid said NAAM had given a minimum of four slots to the NSC to be considered for next year’s Podium Programme. — BernamaMeanwhile, eight countries, including Malaysia, had applied to the organisers of the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, to list archery in the biennial Games.

Currently, the sport is not on the list of 39 sports to be competed. — Bernama
