It has already been more than 2 weeks since the 14 th General Elections. The seismic event which saw the Barisan Nasional lose control of the Federal legislature for the first time since Merdeka.
MOST had predicted that Barisan Nasional would once again win the general election, as it did the past 13 times. Although the Opposition would put up a strong showing, perhaps even better than what they did in the last GE, according to conventional wisdom Barisan would still prevail.
In less than 10 days time, Malaysians will go the polls for the 14th time in the history of this country. According to the Elections Commission, 14,940,624 registered voters are expected to cast their vote in the GE14. 5 years ago, there were 13,268,002 registered voters.
The Government recently tabled a bill known as the Anti Fake News bill in the Dewan Rakyat. The bill was widely criticised by the opposition, civil society groups and media organisations. They argue that if the bill becomes law, it will be used on dissenting and opposition voices.
SO the Government intends to introduce a new legislation to tackle what is termed as "fake news". A special task force has been set up to look into this new legislation to curb this and the Government hopes to table the Bill at the current Parliament sitting.
