NGO urges government to consider extended families first before sending Covid-19 orphans to institutions
IPOH: A non-governmental organisation - OrphanCare Foundation - is concerned about the future of children who became orphans due to the death of their parents because of Covid-19.
IPOH: With the recent alleged abuse of Bella, a 13-year-old girl with Down Syndrome, a non-governmental organisation - OrphanCare Foundation - reiterated its call for the importance of de-institutionalisation (DI).
Some 61% of babies saved by the OrphanCare Foundation have been adopted legally, while 36% were taken back by their mothers. However, illegal adoption still happens because many couples are unaware of the proper procedures.
JOHOR BARU: A total of 45 babies were rescued through OrphanCare Foundation facilities nationwide between March and December last year during the movement control order.
Between January and June this year, 53 babies were abandoned, with Selangor having the most cases. Some suggest that more baby hatches be set up, while the government says it will review current moves to tackle baby dumping more effectively.
Since 2010, OrphanCare’s baby hatches have saved a total of 420 babies, with 252 being adopted, while 155 were parented by their birth mothers. The remaining 13 were referred to the Social Welfare Department.
