HONESTLY, I am tired of seeing Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi bagging all the accolades.
Every year, whether is the Ballon d’Or or the UEFA Best Player in Europe, these two stars stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Since 2010, Messi, who plays for Barcelona, has won the Ballon d’Or three time (2010, 2011, 2012) while Ronaldo, who plays for Real Madrid, has bagged the award the last two times.
This year, both players have been nominated again, together with Brazil’s Neymar.
Many will ask: Who in his right mind would say they’re sick of Messi and Ronaldo?
It’s true, I believe that these two are the best. But as a football fan, I cannot go on waxing lyrical on these two alone. Especially as there are other players who have impressed this year.
I have enjoyed watching the likes of Robert Lewandowski (Poland and Bayern Munich), Neymar (Brazil and Barcelona), Luis Suarez (Uruguay and Barcelona), Alexis Sanchez (Chile and Arsenal), Thomas Mueller (Germany and Bayern Munich), Manuel Neuer (Germany and Bayern Munich), Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium and Manchester City) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden and Paris St Germain).
And two of my favourites are Lewandowski and Suarez.
Who can forget the hattrick the Polish forward scored in four minutes against VfL Wolfsburg?
And then, as if to prove a point, he added two more in five minutes.
In total, he scored five goals in nine minutes!
If you think Wolsburg is an easy side to get past, you are wrong. Their two menacing Brazilian centre-backs, Dante and Naldo, were rock solid. Until, that is, Lewandowski came on …
He made them look like school kids and his goals were brilliant. Right now in world football, he is the best striker … Better than Ibrahimovic!
In 2015, the man from Warsaw scored 41 goals and contributed 9 assists for both Poland and Bayern Munich. Every year, he seems to be getting better!
From a kid who was once advised to eat more bacon on order to be stringer to the man who now scores goals for fun, “The Polish Sniper” has also impressed internationally this season, helping his country qualify for next years Euros.
And then, there is Luis Suarez, who has been dazzling the crowd with his touches, dribbles and goals!
Call him a chomper or diver, to me, he is one of the world’s best players. When he is on the pitch, he gives his 100%! Fans may ridicule him but the former Liverpool striker is one of a kind!
Together with Neymar and Messi, Suarez completes the world’s best attacking trio and whenever sides face them, the defence has to be extra cautious.
Right now, I am worried for Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker who is set to face the three next year in the second round of the UEFA Champions League.
Suarez has 35 goals and 16 assists this year and together with Neymar and Messi, the trio have scored 121 goals. An astonishing record!
Many say he is doing well because of Neymar and Messi but he is the one who completes the team. I believe that if you were to put Suarez in any team, the side will do well.
He is not selfish. He’s a team player. And one who conjures up magical moments and is passionate on the pitch. What else do you need in a footballer?
Both Suarez and Lewandowski, to me, could have been in the top three of the Ballon d’Or but it seems, the likes Ronaldo and Messi will continue hogging that spot for the next two to three years.
It would be refreshing to see a new player winning that award and I have a feeling the likes of Lewandowski and Suarez will be pushing for it next year even though for both of them, the team’s success comes first!
