IT was the 1995 General Election. I was then living with my grandaunty and her family. Like all other general elections, politics became a hot topic in the house amongst the adults. Whenever the family would meet or whenever relatives drop by, there was plenty of analysis on how the political parties have performed and whom they will vote for.
I was only eight years old and the word “politics” was alien to me. As a kid, I was curious. Hence, I asked my grandaunty whom she would vote for and why. The answer I got was similar to those the other adults in the family told me – BN for the Parliamentary seat so that the coalition continues to govern, and DAP for the state seat to ensure that there is someone to check on the government. As a kid who was clueless about politics, that appeared logical to me.
