A possible pathway for resolving human-elephant conflict in Johor

I HAD the good fortune to live in Pahang from 1975 to 1977 as a young biologist. My home was adjacent to the very first "elephant unit" under the then newly-established Perhilitan (Department of Wildlife and National Parks).

I observed three things in relation to wild elephants that were new back then. First, the director-general, Mohamed Khan Momin Khan, instituted a policy to not kill problem wild elephants (it had been the method of choice up to 1972) but instead capture and transport them to a new area (translocate).
