ACCORDING to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the national crime index rose by 11.1% in 2024 with 58,255 cases reported compared to 52,444 in 2023. Property crimes remained the most prevalent, surging 12.4% to 47,188 cases, while assault crimes increased by 5.9% to 11,067 cases.

Crimes are driven by multiple interconnected factors, including economic stress and unemployment, family breakdown and lack of supervision, peer pressure and gang involvement.
