BACK when the mandatory retirement age was 55, one of my colleagues, a Form 5 English language teacher, said he was going to quit his job when he turned 50.
He did opt for early retirement, saying he no longer had the energy to give his best to his pupils. He could have stayed on, earning his full salary and the perks of the job, but his conscience did not allow him to do so.
