The tense escalation of the Kg Sg Baru redevelopment in Kuala Lumpur last week and the on-going Urban Renewal Bill (“Bill”) debates helped to bring some attention to the plight of Malaysians currently caught in the ordeal of redevelopment and what can be done to assist them.
Since early 2024 when the Ministry of Housing and Local Government indicated its plan to introduce an urban renewal act, a quiet redevelopment rush has been taking place in Kuala Lumpur. This became pronounced after 139 sites with redevelopment potential were revealed in the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040.
