THE Urban Renewal Bill was tabled for first reading in Parliament yesterday. If enacted, this law, aimed at controlling and supervising urban renewal for the purposes of town planning, can revitalise neglected urban areas, spur economic growth and improve the quality of life of residents in cities and towns across Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
However, it must strike a fair balance between the interests of all stakeholders – landowners, tenants, developers and the government. Key principles that should guide the adoption of this Bill include:
