I REFER to Hakam’s letter “Malaysia must uphold judicial independence” (The Star, June 27).
It is indeed the duty of the government and other institutions to respect and observe the independence of the judiciary. This is the first of the 20 principles of the United Nations Basic Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary adopted by the Seventh United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders in 1985.
