A Malaysia that speaks in various voices but still has one heart

I RECENTLY heard a radio discussion in which the presenters unexpectedly endorsed the notion of mocking children who speak English when they balik kampung (go back to their hometowns).

I’ve also noticed that a lot of TikTok and Instagram videos over the past two years made fun of or parodied Malaysian children and parents who speak English, especially when they are in balik kampung settings. For laughs, these videos often exaggerate accents or behaviour to make English-speaking Malaysians look like they are out of touch, snobbish, or "trying too hard”.
